BIOGRAPHY

Joseph J. LaViola Jr. is the Charles N. Millican Professor of Computer Science at the University of Central Florida, where he directs the Interactive Computing Experiences Research Cluster. His research focuses on pen- and touch-based computing, 3D user interfaces, virtual and augmented reality, human-robot interaction, and multimodal interaction.

LaViola earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Florida Atlantic University, and master’s degrees in computer science and applied mathematics, as well as a doctorate in computer science, from Brown University. He has held adjunct research positions at Brown and is the founder of Fluidity Software Inc. and JJL Interface Consultants.

He is the lead author of “3D User Interfaces: Theory and Practice” and has published extensively in journals and conferences related to human-computer interaction. His honors include a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the UCF Reach for the Stars Award, and induction into the IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Academy.
