Here are step-by-step instructions on how to make a script file for
the programming homeworks written in Olympus system:
- Olympus_prompt> script "Name_of_script_file"
==> where the "Name_of_script_file" can be "Hm1ProgrammingPartA"
(without double quotes). If you do not specify any file after the
command script, the default file will be called "typescript".
- Olympus_prompt> cat CircleArea.c
==> This command will display the source code in the screen.
- Olympus_prompt> gcc CircleArea.c
==> This is a compilation command. If there are no errors, the prompt
will be displayed in the next line
- Olympus_prompt>a.out
==> This is an executable command which will display the output of the program
- Olympus_prompt>exit
==> This command ends the script file
-
Once the script file is done, you can use "ls -lrt" command in the
Olympus_prompt to see the order of the files from oldest to the newest files
(again do not put double quotes).
-
The name of the script file whether it is "typescript" (if you have not
specified anything) or whichever the name you have entered after the script
command will show at the end of the list.
-
If you would like to print from your Olympus account, please consult
with the staff members in the lab located in the Computer Center 2 Building.
-
However, another option would be to use "ftp" command to transfer the
file (the script file) to some other system to print.
-
For instance, you may be able to ftp to Olympus from your computer and
download the file to your machine. Then, you can use your printer to print
the file.
Here is how ftp can work:
-
From Windows OS, click on the "Start" menu and click on "Run" menu option.
This will give you a small window where you need to type "ftp olympus.acs.ucf.edu"
(without double quotes of course). This command will open an ftp window
to Olympus. You will enter your login and password.
-
Once you are logged in successfully, then you need to download the file
(you need to be in directory where the file is located).
For instance, if the script file is located in subdirectory called
"EGN3211-Summer2006", then you need to type
-
ftp> cd EGN3211-Summer2006
==> This is the ftp command line prompt. Once you in the directory,
you can double check by typing
-
ftp> pwd
==> This commands shows you the path and which directory you currently are.
-
ftp> dir
==> This commands shows the files in the current directory
-
Please note that if the desired file is already in the top level directory,
then you do not need to change to any directories. Once you are in the right
directory, then type
-
ftp> get "Name_of_script_file"
==> where the "Name_of_script_file" can be either user-defined (for instance,
"Hm1ProgrammingPartA" without double quotes). If you did not specify any file
after the command script, the default file is "typescript". After the file
is successfully downloaded, then type
-
ftp> quit
==> This command closes the ftp window.
Where is the downloaded file located in your computer?
-
It can vary from machine the machine. You can simply choose "search option"
and type the name of the file to see where the file is located. Once
you find the file, then you can open it in any editor to send it to your
local printer.
