Digital Media
Moshell - Spring 98
Lecture 14: Charting the New Course
It's time to plan the rest of the semester. A quick read-ahead convinced
me that most of the remaining chapters of the S&N text would do us
little good, in terms of real Digital Media issues. We will, however, work
carefully through Chapter 10, 11 and 12, and use Chapter 17 as a source
of ideas about the tools we're going to demonstrate and discuss.
I propose the following structure:
1) We'll stick with the CGI material as outlined in the syllabus. Also
Chapters 10-12, possibly rescheduled.
2) The following topics will be covered in the other lectures. The format
will be
a) Lectures about the principles associated with each area of
interest, by JMM
b) Demos of the associated software, organized as Quests by various
students (1 or 2 per package)
c) Analysis of the software, based on the principles we have been laying
out.
We want to know, for each software package:
1) Who has it, and is willing and able to demonstrate it?
2) If we don't have it, we will look into buying it.
3) Each Quest will need to incorporate at least one external review
(like zdnet) and a visit to the web site of the software's vendor.
4) We expect to have a good laptop and an excellent overhead projector
to show these demonstrations.
Here's a list of areas and possible software examples.
