Computing Writer's Workshop

			      Homework 1

On July 5, 2000, we will discuss the paper by George D. Gopen and Judith
A. Swan, "the Science of Scientific Writing", American scientist,
vol. 78, pages 550-558.  So read it ahead of time, and be prepared to
discuss it.

If we have time, on July 5 we will also discuss the paper by
Bernard K. Forscher, "Rules for Referees", reprinted from Science,
Oct. 15, 1965, volume 150, pages 319-321, and the handout by David
Gifford "How to Referee a Research Paper".  See also the links from
the course web site.

By July 4, 2000, you should email to the workshop participants a short
written review (1 page) about some book on technical or scientific
writing.  To find such a book, go to the library or bookstore, look at
several books about scientific or technical writing, find a good one,
read it in some detail, and be prepared to give a short (about five
minutes) report on it to the rest of the class on July 5.  You can use
the blackboard or overhead projector if you wish.  The class should
give you feedback on your presentation also.

Following this, will start functioning as a workshop.  You will be
expected to submit at least one draft to the workshop, and to
participate in constructively criticizing the work of others.
