Homework 1. Due: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 Submission: By plain text e-mail to lboloni@cpe.ucf.edu. In the subject write: EEL 5708, HW 1 1. Write a summary of 450-500 words on the paper "Architecture of the IBM System/360" by Amdahl, Blaauw and Brooks. 2. Write a summary of 450-500 words on the paper "The Cray-1 Computer System" by Richard Russel. For both papers: -What were the key parts in the design. Put it in the context of the architecture types discussed in the course. -Discuss the legacy of the architectures. Are there current computers designed on the same ideas? Did some of the ideas become generally accepted, generally rejected or irrelevant? 3. Write a 450-500 word essay on ONE of the following topics (pick your choice) * Assume that a new invention would make network bandwidth very cheap and available anywhere (1000 GB/s for 1$ a month). How would this thing affect the architecture of computers? What about the applications (any new application ideas) ? * Assume that a new invention would make local storage very cheap (1 TerraByte for 0.01$). How would this affect the architecture of computers? What about the applications? Observation: While indicating the number of words on the homework might seem to be restrictive, this is exactly the way in which the papers for conferences need to be written. As future researchers it is important that you can communicate your ideas concisely and accurately.
