SURFING

By Alba LaSalle and A.J. Reyes

Surfing is a very popular and famous sport. Surfing has been around for as long as I can remember. Actually, to be exact Surfing has been around since before 1942, and even before Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World. Surfing has gotten more and more complicated over the years. I'm a Surfer myself, and personally It's not easy at first but you'll get used to It.

All forms of Surfing require exact timing and sharp reflexes to maintain balance. Surfers should also be able to adjust to a breaking wave. Sometimes this task is hard to do because of another Surfer in the water or a choppy wave. Standup Surfing is the most popular form of Surfing. Boards under 7 feet in length are called shortboards. Boards 7 feet and over are called long boards. More experienced Surfers tend to stand toward the front of the board, less experince Surfers tend to stand in the center to maintain better control. More of the skilled Surfers may perform 360's, aerials, and roller coasters.

Our favorite Web page is the La Jolla Surfing Home Page. You'll find lots of surfing information, good surfing spots, and surf reports. Have fun!
