Culture
Belarus possesses a rich folklore and a legacy of literature, art, and
architecture from the Kievan and Lithuanian periods. The 18th and 19th centuries
were a time of Polish and Russian cultural ascendancy. A Belorussian literary
rebirth began at the turn of the 20th century, and native cultural life was
vibrant in the 1920s. Beginning in the 1930s Soviet policy favored the Russian
language and culture; only in the late 1980s did Belorussian cultural life
experience a revival.
