UCF Programming Team has Unmatched Record in ACM Contests

The UCF Programming Team has continued a longstanding tradition of competition success with five team placements in the Southeast Regional Contest, organized by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the largest computing organization in the international community.
At the ACM's regional contest on October 6, 2001, at Georgia College and State University, our UCF Programming Teams competed against groups from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi. Despite competition from 70 to 80 regional teams, our five teams did extremely well! The Intrepid Team placed first, the Excelsior Team finished fourth, the Constitution Team placed seventh while the Stargazer and Pickup Teams placed 15th and 17th respectively.
The Intrepid team's first place finish qualifies it for the AMC World Contest Finals in March 2002. Only a fraction of the teams competing regionally are invited to the International Contest - typically just the top two teams in each region.
Since UCF began participating in the contest in 1982, it has continually finished in the top three in the Southeast Region - a record that is unmatched by any other school.
In 2000-2001, UCF's team competed against more than 2,800 groups from 71 countries. And we were one of just 64 teams that advanced to the final contest, placing 14th overall.
Now our five programming teams are preparing for the 2001-2002 International Contest, which is just weeks away. The entire university wishes the teams and their advisor, Dr. Ali Orooji, the very best of luck!
