A Message from the Director

Welcome to the first issue of SEECS Network, the new newsletter for the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. SEECS is the home to University of Central Florida’s programs in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Computer Science and, last but not least, Information Technology.
We proudly have more than 450 graduate students pursuing Ph.D. and Master’s programs in these three areas of study. As you will read in our first issue, UCF’s Computer Science Doctoral Program was recently rated 10th in a national survey funded by the National Science Foundation and conducted by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students.
SEECS is home to more than 2,500 undergraduate students seeking Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology and to many of the National Merit Scholars at UCF

We are also proud of our Champion Programming Team, which was ranked first in the Southeast Region in 2000 and 2001, second in the United States after Caltech in 2000, and 11th among some 2,400 programming teams worldwide from all five continents.

Our talented faculty has received national and international awards and honors for excellence in research and education, and includes five IEEE Fellows, two ACM Fellows and two Fellows of the Institute of Combinatorics.
SEECS research grants for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2001, exceeded $3.9 million from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Army and Navy, NASA and high-tech companies such as Adaptec, Agere (Lucent/CIRENT), Harris, Schwartz Electro-Optics, Boeing, Raytheon, Theseus Logic, Trendium, Teranex, Honeywell and Giganet Technologies Inc. See page 6 to learn more about our grants from July to December 2001.
2002 promises to be one of excellence and achievement for the students, faculty and staff of SEECS. We look forward to keeping you updated on our degree programs, faculty, students, alumni and much more in this new newsletter.

Erol Gelenbe is the University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He serves as Director of SEECS and Associate Dean of Engineering and Computer Science.
