The University of Central Florida (UCF) enrolls over 32,000 students. It is among the Nation's fastest growing universities, with enrollment expected to grow to 48,000 by 2010. The School of Computer Science has approximately 125 graduate and 970 undergraduate majors, with 10 Ph.D., 30 M.S. and 123 B.S. degrees awarded last year. Research programs in the School enjoy the support of several Federal agencies such as NSF, ONR, ARO, NASA, NIH, STRICOM and NAWC as well as many industries including Lucent/Cirent, Sun Microsystems, DPT, Oracle, Harris and others.
In the fall of 1998, the University elevated its Computer Science Department to School status and made a major commitment to its development as a premier educational and research unit. The School occupies a new 30,000 square-feet building, with state of the art laboratories and an attractive environment for research and faculty-student interaction. Last year, Professor Erol Gelenbe was recruited to serve as Director of the School. Under his leadership, we started our first year of expansion by making several excellent faculty appointments at all academic ranks.
The School is expected to grow by at least twelve tenured or tenure-track faculty appointments in the next three years. Current research areas include Algorithmics and Complexity, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Architecture, Computer Vision, Databases, Multimedia, Networks, Parallel and Distributed Systems, and Simulation (please see our web page at www.cs.ucf.edu). We are seeking outstanding candidates for faculty positions at all levels and in all areas of computer science. The primary criteria are a deep commitment to the academic process, including teaching and research. Candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level should have funded research and clearly demonstrated leadership in their fields at the national or international level. Those seeking assistant professor positions should have an established track record in high quality publications, and be recognized for their contributions and outstanding promise.
The Orlando area is a major national center for industrial research and development. It is the heart of Florida's I-4 high technology corridor and is in close proximity to the Kennedy Space Flight Center. The region, noted for its quality of life and vacation attractions, is one of the Nation's fastest growing centers for technology-based industries. Examples include simulation and training, software, optics and lasers, microelectronics, and space related industries. The faculty and graduate students of the School maintain close ties with researchers in these industries and, in particular, with those located in the Central Florida Research Park, adjacent to UCF's campus.
