General Requirements

The requirements for the Masters Degree may be satisfied by either a Non-thesis Option or a Thesis Option.

MS students in the thesis option must select an advisor from the regular Computer Science faculty. The advisor and student then select the student's advisory committee which must include at least two (2) additional Computer Science faculty. Advisors for the nonthesis option are optional.

For the thesis option, copies of a written proposal (6--8 pages) of the thesis must be submitted to the student's committee members and each member of the Computer Science Graduate Committee for approval prior to enrolling in CXX 6971 Thesis. The proposal should include the following: a title page, an abstract, and the following sections: introduction, previous work, proposed work, Gant chart, and bibliography.

Non-Thesis Option

This option is a 36-semester-hour program consisting of course work and at most six (6) hours of individual instruction such as independent study or research report, etc., and is not open to students holding an assistantship in the School.

Thesis Option

The thesis option is a 30-semester-hour program consisting of 24 hours of course work (excluding independent study) and six hours of CXX 6971 (thesis hours). A thesis is to be a well-written, documented paper that culminates with an oral presentation to the student's advisor and research committee. It should be a theoretical paper with some degree of original contribution by the student. Copies of the thesis must be bound and deposited in the University Library and with the School of Computer Science. The format must adhere to the policies and procedures established by the Office of Graduate Studies.

Plan of Study

The Plan of Study, required by Florida law, specifies all degree requirements and is a contract between the student and the Degree Program. The form must be filed with the School of Computer Science prior to completion of nine hours of courses that appear on the form. Regardless of the option and electives chosen, the plan of study must satisfy the following: 1. At least 36 semester hours for the non-thesis option and 30 semester hours for the thesis option.
2. A grade point average of 3.0 or better. An A or B must be received in the three required courses and the two 6000-level regularly scheduled courses. At most six (6) hours of C work may appear in the plan of study.
3. No courses below the 5000-level.
4. The non-thesis option can contain no more than six hours of independent study. Independent study cannot be used in the thesis option.
5. No course may be applied toward the degree that was completed more than seven years prior to the date of graduation.
6. No more than 6 hours of thesis work, CXX 6971, for the thesis option. The number of credit hours required in each section is given below as m/n, where m is the number of hours required in the non-thesis option and n is the number required in the thesis option.
1. Required Courses 9/9 Semester Hours
(Students must receive an A or B grade in these three courses.)
(a) CDA 5106* Advanced Computer Architecture I (3 hours)
(b) COT 5405* Design and Analysis of Algorithms (3 hours)
(c) One of the following:
i. COT 5310* Formal Languages (3 hours)
ii. COP 5021 Programming Languages II (3 hours)
iii COP 5611 Operating System Design Principles (3 hours)
* Required for the Ph.D. program.

2. Restricted Electives 27/15 Semester Hours
Restricted electives must include two 6000-level Computer Science courses (six credits) taught by the School of Computer Science, exclusive of independent study, and may not include any course for which the grade received is below a B. The remaining courses will normally be taken from 5000- and 6000-level Computer Science courses. In the thesis option, approval may be granted for up to three credits from graduate courses outside Computer Science. Approval may be granted for up to six such credits in the non-thesis option. The non-thesis option allows up to six hours of independent study. Students, with approval from their advisor, may take up to 6 graduate level credits outside the department. All others must be courses with CAP, CDA, CEN, COP, or COT prefixes.

3. Thesis 0/6 Semester Hours

Note: Course outside Computer Science must be pre-approved by a faculty advisor in order for the student to receive credit.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of nine hours may be transferred into the program from post baccalaureate status and/or another State University System (SUS) school. This implies that at least 21 hours (27 hours in the non-thesis option) must be earned at UCF while in regular graduate status.
