Abstract

The applications of data communications are widespread and these fuel the research efforts in this area. In this presentation, we will talk about the outcomes of a two-year long cable-modem project. Basic building blocks of data communications will be outlined and the problems, which should be solved for a robust data communication, are discussed. We will especially note the fact that there is still some room for future research and improvement in the basic data communication problems even though there exists very powerful methods and algorithms for the solution. Each of the system blocks of data modems is intended to solve a certain problem. We will not only describe these problems and their solutions but also discuss the issues, which arise in practical implementations. We will concentrate on the real-time implementations of software modems on fixed-point DSP platforms and talk about the practical problems associated with such implementations. Echo cancellation, equalization and automatic gain control blocks will be the main blocks of interest in this talk.

About the Speaker
