CAP-5937  - ST: Bioinformatics

Assignment – 1

(Due date: 09/08/04)

  1. Define the following terms, in your own words:
    1. Gene
    2. RNA
    3. Protein
    4. Coding strand of DNA
    5. Transcription
    6. Translation
    7. Central Dogma
    8. Intron
    9. Exon
    10. Pseudogene
    11. Genetic code
    12. Reading Frame
    13. RNA Polymerase

  1. Write down all possible amino acid sequences that might be produced from the following double stranded DNA sequence.

§         Assume that transcription starts within the given sequence

§         Remember that any of the two strands can act as coding strand,

§         Transcription always happens from the 3’ to the 5’ direction

§         Translation always starts from an ‘AUG’, and ends in one of the three stop codons.

You can take the help of programs like ORF finder (Open Reading Frame Finder)  if necessary.

3’-CTTAGATGGATGGATGCAGCTTACTATAACTGACTAGCAT-5’

5’-GAATCTACCTACCTACGTCGAATGATATTGACTGATCGTA-3’

  1. Compute the number of distinct genes(DNA sequences) that will produce the following, (imaginary) amino acid sequence: MEPVFTYILH. Refer to the genetic code. Ignore stop codons.
